The world is not prepared for extreme weather
Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC), Data for Good at Meta, and Rare released a new report today titled “International Public Opinion on Climate Change: Extreme Weather and Vulnerability, 2023” with survey data from 139,136 respondents in 187 countries and territories. Big take-aways:
1. Over 50% of respondents in all areas say they’ve experienced extreme weather impacts , such as rising sea levels, flood, drought, long periods of unusually hot weather, wildfire, and severe weather.
2. A majority of respondents in 31 out of 73 areas say they are not prepared for extreme weather with many saying it would take a year or more for them to recover from extreme weather impacts.
The report is a fantastic resource for leaders, journalists, and humanitarian organizations in each country and territory, especially with the intensification and increased number of extreme weather events happening around the world.
