Jonathan Van Ness’s science-backed sustainable haircare line is all the hair love we need
We know and love Jonathan Van Ness for his work on Queer Eye, Gay of Thrones, and Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness (which is a podcast and now also a Netflix series that’s as delightful as he is!) I recently learned that he has a sustainable haircare line, JVN Hair, with healthy ingredients and sustainable packaging.
As newly curly girl (chemo has caused my hair to grow back with wild coily curls rather than my pre-chemo slightly wavy hair), I’ve been at a loss for how to style them. I’ve tried tons of products to keep the frizz at bay and to try to get these curls into shape. It’s been a struggle and impacted my confidence in some circumstances. Dating during a pandemic and after breast cancer is hard enough, and not loving my hair has made it even more challenging.
On The Drew Barrymore Show, Drew did a dating segment with the Queer Eye cast and Jonathan mentioned his haircare line. I looked it up online and the healthy ingredients, sustainable packaging, body positive messaging, and statistics of its effectiveness won me over. I ordered the Air Dry Cream and the Deep Moisture Mask. With my order, they included substantial sample sizes of the Nourishing Shine Drops, Hydrating Shampoo, and Hydrating Conditioner.
One use and the frizz is gone. As soon as I got out of the shower, I could tell that my hair felt different. I’ve tried so many products over the last few months and nothing’s worked well. These JVN Hair products are spectacular, affordable, and I feel good about the focus on sustainability in the products and packaging.
The secret ingredient is hemisqualane, a scientifically-tested molecule made through bio fermentation of sustainable sugarcane. It penetrates each strand of hair and nourishes the hair shaft from the inside out all while protecting color and reducing frizz. Unlike silicone which is derived from fossil fuel, not healthy to add to our hair, and rampant in the beauty industry, hemisqualane is effective and clean, and adds healthy softness, shine, and bounce to hair while protecting, repairing, and smoothing it. Hemisqualane improves hair over the long-run so every time we use it, our hair gets better and it’s in every JVN Hair product.
Another hair challenge I’ve run into with curly hair is exactly which products were right for my hair. What type of curls do I have? What am I trying to achieve with them? Do I layer products or use them solo? As a formerly wavy hair girl who used to just take a shower, shake out my hair, and go, my now-curly hair requires much more care and maintenance. I was lost and feeling very self-conscious.
On the JVN Hair site, you take the fun quiz and you’ll know exactly which products would be most helpful for your hair. But here’s the best part—all of the JVN Hair products work for all hair types and textures so you can’t go wrong trying any of them.
Surviving cancer is a feat in and of itself. The challenging process of getting to know my new body and new hair is something I didn’t anticipate. As a woman in New York trying to date in the wake of a pandemic, it’s leveled up even higher. I’m grateful to Jonathan and his team at JVN hair for helping me reclaim my hair, body, and spirit.
