How business can save the world
Remember five years ago when the biggest concern about the US President was that he wore a tan suit? I miss those days. (FWIW, I liked the suit.) What did our current president do today? Rolled back regulations on emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, for oil and gas companies.
The irony? Major energy companies have spoken out AGAINST the roll back of regulations. This was another reminder to me that it may be business, and not our government, that will save us from ourselves.
This is kind of news is exactly why when people ask me, “Why do you have a career in business?” I say it’s the only way to ensure business is used as a power for good. Because it can be and I’d like to make sure it will be. It’s why I decided to go back to school and study biomimicry at The Biomimicry Center at Arizona State University. It’s why I decided that although I could absolutely spend the rest of my career working in product development and bringing in heaps of money doing what I’ve been doing, that I had to change course. I had to bring science, sustainability, and climate change into my work in a deep and meaningful way. Though it’s the harder road for me personally, it’s what matters most for the good of the world.
