Inspired by Chigs, a contestant on The Great British Baking Show who started baking about a year ago as a pandemic hobby, I’ve started to think about a new hobby to take up in 2022. This is something I would do just for the joy it gives me. Have you taken up a hobby just for the fun of it? How did you choose to pursue it?

I’m thinking about options now and have developed a few ways to narrow down the vast list of possibilities.

My new hobby must-have list:

No screens
I spent a lot of time in front of a computer for my work. Though I love what i do, I want this new hobby to be away from screens as much as possible.

Pure enjoyment
I want this to be something I start to do just for the fun of it. If it leads to other things, great, but for now I just want it to be something that’s fun and interesting.

Not expensive
As I’m starting out with this new hobby, I don’t want to have to make a big financial investment for it. If I really love it and want to level up after some time, terrific. But I don’t want there to be a huge cost to try it out. So I have to already have what I need for it, or the supplies have to be pretty minimal.

Can practice alone or with others
I’d like the new hobby to be something I can do on my own, or something that I could do with other as well in a class or with friends.

Resources to learn it
I’d like my new hobby to have a wide variety of resources to learn from: online videos, podcasts about it, instruction books, apps, etc.

Community of others who have this hobby
I’d love for my new hobby to help me meet new people. I’d like to join a new community that is passionate about it and with members that help each other improve their skill.

Shareable
I’d love to be able to share my progress, and the results, with others in some way.

Sustainability
I want my new hobby to be trash-free. If my hobby involves a material good, I’d love to find a way to upcycle materials and give them new life.

Not sedentary
I spend a lot of my work time sitting in front of my computer. If possible, I’d like my new hobby to have some type of active component. That could play out in many different ways.

Good for my health
Because I’m using 2022 to get back in shape after a rough health year in 2021, I want my new hobby to be good for my health, or at least not detrimental to it!

I’m open to any and all suggestions. I’ll be regularly posting about my search for a new hobby and my progress.
