Me in Central Park on my walk to the hospital this morning

Today’s a new chapter! After 14 months of painful tissue expanders, I got my soft implants. In the new year, I’m getting back in shape with my new boobs after a year of working hard to restore my health.

Last night, the last one in my old body, my sister and dog snoozed. I lie awake smiling, proud of myself that I’d made this journey. I imagine this is how mountain climbers feel their last night at camp, knowing the next morning they’ll reach the summit and down the other side of the mountain onto their next journey.

As I walked through Central Park to the hospital this morning, I saw the new me in my new body, ready for the next chapter, waving wildly at me from a peak in the distance. She smiled wide. She jumped up and down, pumping her fists in the air cheering, “You made it, girl. You made it.” We beat cancer.

I look down at my old body and thank her. She worked hard and believed in herself. She learned how to trust other people and ask for help. She ate well and exercised. She wrote and wrote and wrote. She kept her stress in check. She earned a living. She persevered. She did the best she could every day with what she had, even on days when she didn’t even have breath. She loved. She dreamed of today from the moment of her diagnosis. Now it’s here. It’s right here.

Because she did all that, I get to be here to love the rest of my happy, healthy life. I’m so proud of her. I’m so grateful to her. She did this.

Life is not one mountain but many. I’m ready for new adventures that take me into this beautiful world with its beautiful beings. I’m ready to know my new body, to build her back up physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. She deserves to be cared for, loved, and celebrated, and I’ll do all that. I’m ready to live, really fully live again. And I will.

I’m overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, support, and kindness from so many of you. I’m the luckiest. Shouts to my incredible medical team at NYU Langone Health. You saved me many times. I’m so grateful.

Here’s to us and here’s to healing. Let’s lift each other up and celebrate each day together. Our mountains are calling. Take my hand. Let’s go. Tits out.
